Getting Used To Dentures

When you first start to use dentures, it will feel a little strange as you adjust to the new sensation. Make sure you ask your dentist about any questions you have. They will show you how to properly insert and remove your dentures, and if it is uncomfortable in any way, you can schedule a follow-up appointment for adjustments.

Begin with softer foods when you first start to eat. You can also practice by pronouncing certain words and massaging your gums. It’s perfectly normal to have excess saliva when you first wear dentures, as your mouth is still learning to adjust. Most patients will begin to get used to their dentures after around 2 to 4 weeks.

Denture Care

For care and maintenance, you should treat your dentures just like you would for your natural teeth. They need to brushed daily with a soft bristled brush, and it’s also recommended that you frequently rinse them under running water to remove debris.

You should remove your dentures before bed every night and soak them in a glass of water or denture cleaner to keep them moist when you are not wearing them. Even with proper maintenance, most dentures will require a reline every 2 years, and a replacement every 5 to 7 years.
